‘Women in Market’ by Allan Strawbridge.

Exhibited at the International Arts Centre, London, September 1945.

As WWII ended on the 2nd of September 1945. This exhibition must have been no more than a few weeks after this. Although there is the colour and movement of a bustling market there is also a heaviness that seems to have transcended the war era into this work. As an onlooker put it as I was carrying it “It’s a proper grown-up picture that’”.

Confident broad brushstrokes almost verge on the abstract but the artist really has managed to translate the scene competently.

Framed in its original simple painted wooden frame.

It is in very good vintage condition with only very minor wear and tear, certainly nothing large enough to point out.

Measuring 58cm x 48cm.
