Antique Original Portrait of an Armoured Man by John Closterman, Oil on Canvas, 17th Century
Antique Original Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting ‘John Hoby Esq. Son to Sir John Hoby Baronet’, Late 17th/Early 18th Century
by John Closterman (also known as Johan Baptist, Cloosterman, Cloysterman Klosterman; 1660–1711)
A spectacular portrait depicting a proud chap in armour.
It is extremely well painted, without the inscription on the back it was first attributed to John Riley, with whom Closterman worked in his studio when he first came to England in 1681 but taking into account the inscription and on further inspection, it has now been attributed to Closterman by the renowned specialists Lowell Libson & Johnny Yarker Ltd. saying that ‘Closterman is, in many ways, a finer painter than Riley and certainly more commercially desirable.’ (Letter available on request).
In its original and highly decorative gilt frame.
The painting itself is in good order, the canvas has been lined at some point, by the looks of it probably at some point in the early-mid 20th Century, it is clean and bright so was probably cleaned up at this point too. There is some craquelure to the surface as you would expect. The frame is also in good order from age, it does have some wear but is largely intact.
Overall measurements: 93cm x 83cm.
