Large Original Gouache Painting by Anthony Day (1922-2023)
An unusually bold and almost abstract example of Day’s work who was more renowned for his Cambridgeshire landscapes.
Depicting a dense vegetable patch in Autumn and focusing on a bulbous tomato plant, Day has really captured the scene using different-sized confident brushstrokes as well as flicking paint to great effect all in a wonderfully autumnal colour palette.
Signed and dated 1958 in pencil to the lower left with original paper label verso with original price of 25 Guineas.
Framed and glazed in its original deep-set frame which was also painted by by the artist with a note verso ‘Frame painted with Gesso (zinc oxide and French chalk mixed with glue size to the consistency of paint)’.
The painting is in good vintage condition with only minimal wear commensurate with age.
Overall measurements 92cm x 71cm x 8cm.
