Large Vintage Belgian Expressionist Portrait of a Man, Original Oil on Canvas Painting, c. 1950s
Large Vintage Belgian Expressionist Portrait of a Man, Original Oil on Canvas Painting, c. 1950s
Mid-Century Portrait Painting by Lucien Brescheau (1930-2020)
Depicting a man with a well-weathered face, a steely-eyed stare and pursed lips in a blue shirt and waistcoat.
Painted in an expressionist style that really captures the character of the sitter.
I would date this painting to the late 1940s - early 1950s period.
Signed to the lower right ‘Brescheau’.
Remnants of original exhibition/competition label verso which lists the involvement of the organisations L’Academie des Beaux-Arts, Metro Goldwyn Mayer and two Belgian national newspapers, La Dernière Heure and Het Laatste Nieuws which denotes it would have presumably been a fairly prestigious competition/exhibition.
In its original and simple pine frame.
The painting itself is in very good vintage condition, there doesn’t appear to be any serious problems, there is some minor wear commensurate with age and a little craquelure to the surface but overall it is in great shape.
Overall measurements 103cm x 83cm x 3cm.
