Fine Antique Burr Walnut Card Table Attributed to Gillows, 19th Century
Antique Victorian Card Table
A handsome and elegant folding card table with a quarter-veneered burr walnut top on tapering fluted legs and raised on brass feet.
The top with attractive rounded corners opens up to reveal recessed corners for counters or chips and a green baize playing card surface.
A mahogany-lined drawer which can be used to store gaming supplies pulls out to act as the support for the fold-over top when gaming, which then reverts back to a side table when not required.
The table is unsigned but we have confidently attributed the piece to Gillows of Lancaster looking at other examples that have also been attributed as well as signed examples using the same mechanisms, hardware and designs. Unfortunately, only around 30% of Gillows' furniture was ever signed.
Probably dates to the mid-19th century period. circa 1850s-1870s in date.
The table is largely in good vintage condition, all mechanisms work as they should and it is still a very usable table. There is some cosmetic wear commensurate with age throughout as you would expect. There are a couple of small pieces of trim or beading missing but this doesn't affect use and isn't hugely noticeable. One of the legs has an old repair to the top which is secure and stable.
