'Revue De L'Annee 1866' Humorous French Plates by Hautin Boulenger
Set of Three Antique Porcelain Plates by Hautin Boulenger (H.B.) Choisy-le-Roi, 19th Century
Each features a cartoon by ‘H. Nyon’ from the review of the year 1866.
I am guessing there was a lot of rain that year as the first depicts a disappointed sun walking along a riverbank underneath an umbrella with a frog and a fish having the time of their lives. The inscription ‘Grand réjouissance du monde aquatique’ translates as: ‘ Great rejoicing in the aquatic world.
The second depicts a group of people standing outside at night in their pyjamas. The inscription reads: ‘Le tremblement de terre. Oh! M'assieu Schappin.. Qu'elle secousse’ which I belive translates to 'The earthquake. Oh! sit down Schappin .. let her shake. I am guessing there may have been a earthquake that year.
The final one seems to commemorate a transatlantic cable. Al to of fish are gathering around said cable absolutely shocked to see it there. The inscription reads: ‘Le câble transatlantique. Ô grand neptune! pouvez-vous souffrir cela’ translating as ‘The transatlantic cable. O great neptune! can you suffer this’.
Each comes with a brass hanging bracket.
They are all in great vintage condition with only minor wear and tear nd nothing too serious.
