Pair of Carved Oak Cloven Hoofed Beasts, 18th Century
Pair of Carved Oak Cloven Hoofed Beasts, 18th Century
Early Antique Wooden Carvings
Depicting cloven hoofed beasts, I have settled on deer or fawns but there is an element of goat and dog about them too. Quite possibly some form of mythical creatures.
Dating from at east the 18th century but could quite possibly be earlier.
Wonderfully characterful carving.
Probably continental in origin and have come off of a larger piece, they quite possibly could be arms from a giant throne or pew.
They are generally in good condition for their age, they have a wonderfully rich natural patina to them, there are a couple of losses here and there and there is some historic woodworm but these are forgiven and add to their charm.
Each one measures 49cm long x 11cm deep x 13cm high.
