Leather Camel Saddlebag from the Tuareg People, c.1920s
Leather Camel Saddlebag from the Tuareg People, c.1920s
Vintage Leatherwork Bag from North Africa
The Tuareg people are a fiercely independent, large Berber ethnic confederation. They principally inhabit the Sahara in a vast area stretching from far southwestern Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. Traditionally nomadic pastoralists, small groups of Tuareg are also found in northern Nigeria.
They create impressive, functional objects from leather which is their primary material due to its durability, lightness and flexibility and they are masters of geometric abstract design.
This is one of the finest examples of a saddlebag I can find and is adorned with beautiful tassels and geometric designs.
Picked up by the last owner directly from the Tuareg in Algeria.
It could still be used but is a highly decorative object in its own right.
It is not a tourist piece and is a genuine bag that has been used, well-loved and repaired accordingly. There are a few tassels missing and some minor wear and tear but overall is in really good order.
Excluding the hanging straps, it measures 106cm wide x 76cm high with the opening flap folded down and 125cm high with the opening flap in the up position.
