Original Vintage Oil on Canvas Painting ‘Reverie - a self portrait’ by
David McClure (SCOTTISH 1926-1998) R.S.A. R.S.W.
I fell for this one as soon as I saw it. I do love artists self-portraits in their studio setting. It’s great to see a glimpse into their world.
This one depicts McClure contemplating, sat cross-legged on a chair in the centre of a room with an amazing pink shirt/yellow stiped tie combo. Poking out between his grey slacks and brown loafers you can see a flash of his coral socks.
If that couldn’t get any better the interior is also top-notch. The walls and floors are very dark in contrast to the bright day outside. The mustard curtains, pea-green rug and painted furniture work a treat.
He is sat in between his palette and a portrait he is currently working on sat in an easel. It would be amazing to track down that painting. It looks to be of a woman in the very same interior.
McClure was born in Lochwinnoch in 1926, he graduated in the early 1950s from Edinburgh College of Art where his contemporaries included Blackadder, Houston and Michie and where he similarly came under the various influences of the major Edinburgh figures of the time; Redpath, Gillies, Maxwell, MacTaggart, Henderson Blyth. He also spent significant periods in his early career working in Spain, Italy, Sicily and Norway and taught at Dundee College of Art from 1957-85 retiring as Head of Painting, a post he took over from his good friend and colleague Alberto Morrocco.
It came from the previous owner framed and glazed however it is not to my taste to glaze oil paintings however it will be sent in the original frame which can be used glazed or not depending on taste.
