Portrait of an Ardéchois Peasant by Jean Saussac, 1960s
Portrait of an Ardéchois Peasant by Jean Saussac, 1960s
Original Vintage Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting
‘Esquisse pour un portrait de paysan Ardéchois’ by Jean Saussac 1922-2005.
Jean Saussac seems to have been quite an interesting person, after being part of the resistance in WWII he became a painter, as well as set designer for theatre and film. Later on, as a member of the Communist Party, he became the mayor of Antraigues-sur-Volane, in the
Ardèche. A town frequented by many famous artists including Jacques Brel, Alexander Calder and Jean Ferrat amongst others.
Painted in 1964 this charming portrait really does capture something about the sitter and although on the surface the technique seems quite naive, quite a lot of personality comes across.
In original simple wooden frame.
In excellent vintage condition with only minor wear and tear.
Measuring: 48.5cm high x 40cm wide x 3cm deep.
