Portrait of a Woman by Francis William Helps RBA, 1950s
Original Vintage Oil on Canvas Painting
‘The Ladder’ by Francis William Helps RBA (1890-1972)
An utterly charming and wholeheartedly sensitive portrait of a woman sat casually on the sofa mending her tights. There is plenty of feeling both in the sitter and coming from the artist. I am wondering if she was a family member or someone close to the artist.
Exhibited in the Royal Academy (RA) in 1952.
Helps lead an interesting life, from 1908 he was taught by Henry Tonks and Fred Brown at the Slade School of Art. He served in France during WWI in the Artists Rifles Regiment and in 1922-1924 he was chosen as the official artist for the Everest expedition. Unlike Mallory and Irvine, he returned to London! He taught at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the thirties and later at Leeds School of Art. He was inducted as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1933 and exhibited throughout the country during his lifetime as well as after his death in 1972.

The painting itself is in excellent vintage condition as is the the frame with minor wear and tear as you would expect.
