Originally made to be used to sit next to fires to keep the warmth in homes and taverns settles also make great hall benches or work well in kitchens or dining rooms as seating up to a dining table.
Made from ebonised solid oak this example has a high-panelled back with chip-carved floral decoration along the top edge.
With attractive curving-shaped sides and armrests.
Peg and tenon joints.
Recently upholstered with a simple black and white striped cotton ticking.
Dating from the late 19th/early 20th century period.
It is in good vintage order. there are a couple of old repairs but it is extremely solid and sturdy. The original ebonised finish is worn but we think this adds to its charm and tells its story.
