'The Neophyte', Large Signed Etching by Gustave Doré, 19th Century
Antique Print Entitled ‘The Neophyte (First Experience of the Monastery)’ by Gustave Dore, 1832 -1883
A captivating, somewhat creepy and darkly humorous take on someone’s first day reporting for duty as a monk. I think Doré wanted you to see yourself in this chap, surrounded by decrepit and well-weather-beaten, more experienced brothers.
An original ‘Aquaforte’ etching after the original painting by the same artist, signed in pencil in the margin.
Dating to the 1860s-1870s period.
Framed and glazed n its original ebonised and parcel-gilt frame.
The etching itself is in excellent vintage condition as it has been protected behind the glass all these years. The frame is also in good order with some minor wear around the edges commensurate with age.
Overall measurements: 107cm x 92cm.
