Portrait of a Seated Woman by Alys Woodman, Original Antique Oil Painting, 1920s
Antique Original Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting a Female Sitter by Alys Woodman (1897-1987) RBSA
Depicts a stylish woman in a typical 1920s dress, stockings, black leather Mary Jane shoes and sporting a short bob hairstyle.
Painted when the artist was twenty-four years old I am wondering if the sitter was a friend of hers. There is a casual behind-the-scenes vibe to the situation but with legs crossed hands clasped and a thoughtful glance into the distance there seems to be something on her mind and the artist has captured this feeling very sensitively.
An unusually proportioned long canvas choice echoes the sitter and allows for some space for some earthy blocks of colour for the wall and floor and a dark curtain behind. Overall the composition is very decorative.
Signed verso ‘A.L. Woodman and dated ‘Oct 1921’.
Condition-wise there are no holes, tears or areas of restoration. The painting itself does have some cosmetic wear but we think this adds to the charm and aesthetic of the piece, there is a sort of dusty quality to it which works well in a decorative sense. This could be cleaned, restored and re-varnished depending on taste but we would leave it exactly how it is.
Overall measurements 80cm high x 36cm wide x 2cm deep.
