Mycology Interest, Vintage Original Watercolour on Paper Depiction of a Horse Mushroom (Psalliota Arvensis or Agaricus Avensis)

by Julius Schäffer (1882-1944)

Schäffer was a German mycologist, his contributions include studies on the Agaricales (gilled mushrooms). Later, he revised the genus in the series Die Pilze Mitteleuropas (1926–1967); his notes were published posthumously by his wife Liesel in 1952 with the help of other mycologists. The work was considered the "authoritative treatment of the group for Central Europe".

Schäffer is the only mycologist of modern times known to have died from consuming poisonous mushrooms, in this case, Paxillus involutus (Brown Rollrim).

A faithful and scientific study, probably taken in the field.

Fully inscribed and signed to the lower right.

Dating from the late 1930s-early 1940s period.

Framed and glazed in a simple black frame with a floating mushroom-coloured mount.

The painting itself is in very good condition with only minimal wear commensurate with age.

Overall measurements: 38.5cm x 31cm. The painting measures 25cm x 17cm.
