Early Antique Engraved Silver Crucifix, Reliquary Cross Box Pendant, 17th Century
Antique Silver Crucifix/Latin Cross
A striking and decorative piece made from continental silver with a central crucifix engraved with a fairly naive depiction of Christ.
The central cross is surrounded by decorative silver embellishments in the form of catholic symbols, including winged angels/cherubs and what appear to be sacred hearts with daggers, etc., surrounded by thorns.
On the reverse there is. a plain silver crucifix back with a hinge that can be lifted to reveal six small compartments which would have originally been used to store holy relics related to the saints or possibly pieces believed to be of the true holy cross.
Probably dating from the 17th century (1600s) and originating from either Spain or Portugal.
Could be worn as a pendant on a chain or strap, it can be displayed hung on a wall or in a cabinet of curiosities.
For its age, it is in very good vintage condition, there is obviously some wear from use/handling over the years as you would expect, but everything is where it should be.
Approximate measurements 11.5cm high x 8.5cm wide x 0.5cm deep.
Approximate weight 50g.
