Collection of Antique South Indian Silk Embroidered Hand Fans Textile Embroidery
Antique Hand-Made Keralan Patchwork Pankha or Visri
Hand fans are a culturally significant part of Indian history and culture. They are not only a traditional method of cooling yourself in the hot Indian air but also a tool for romance, a language to appease, cajole or seduce.
They are traditionally made by women from whatever materials are locally available and can be embellished over time.
These examples are probably made from bamboo and are covered with silks and cotton with leather handles. They are lovingly hand-sewn with beautiful sunburst designs.
Originating from Southern India and probably more specifically Kerala. Two of the examples are signed by their makers.
Dating from the late 19th/Early 20th Century period.
They are in well-used condition but are all present and correct, they have naturally faded over time in the Indian sun and have wear consistent with years of use.
The largest measures 68cm x 66cm.
The medium one measures 62cm x 52cm.
The smallest measures 48cm x 48cm.
