Carved African Folk Art Bust - Igbo Tribal King, 20th Century
Carved African Folk Art Bust - Igbo Tribal King, 20th Century
Vintage Wooden Sculpture
A charming and characterful depiction of an Eze (King) of the Igbo people.
Inscribed ‘Ichie Eze Dina Obu-Nri’. I am by no means an expert in Igbo language but I believe this translates as something along the lines of ‘The king is a foodie’ or perhaps ‘The king lay down to eat’. It is perhaps a nickname of this particular king but what is safe to say is he enjoyed food in some way.
Carved in a slightly naive, yet skillfully depictive way from one single block of relatively heavy wood which probably originates from Nigeria or the surrounding countries.
A hard thing to date but it does have some age to it, I would probably say mid 20th Century but it could date anywhere between the 1930s and 1970s.
It is in excellent vintage condition with only minor wear and tear commensurate with age.
Measuring 48cm high x 30cm wide x 24cm deep.
