1960s Bus Blind from a Standerwick 'Gay Hostess' Coach
Vintage Coach Destination Sign
This has got to be the best one of these I have ever seen. Dating from the early 1960s when the motorways were first introduced Standerwick double decker coaches, know as Gay Hostesses went up and down the M1 and M6 motorways.
Along with some great place names such as Blackpool, Manchester, London, Gretna Green etc. there are some great alternative destinations such as ‘Football Match’, ‘Races’ and ‘Afternoon Tour’. This really does get your imagination going about all the people who used these services, a day out at the races, a cup final or perhaps even eloping to Gretna Green…
This really is quite a decorative, unusual wall filler and a great talking point. I love the vintage typeface and the colour. It would work pretty much anywhere. I do see vintage bus blinds quite regularly but none as good as this. they are often cut into sections or single destinations and framed but as this is a complete example we have left it as it is so it would either suit a collector of transport memorabilia or would equally work well as an interior design piece.
Overall it is in great vintage condition, there is some minor wear and tear as can be seen from the photographs but we think it adds to the charm and it isn’t ripped or torn.
I believe it is around 10 meters long but you can display a section at a time as it rolls up. This was just a rough measurement on my own section by section but If you want a precise measurement please get in touch. It is 69cm wide.
