BONE IDLE...Our Round Up of Creative Jaw Droppers we stumbled upon this week

They say the best creativity comes from being idle - I’m not sure if scrolling on Instagram can be classed as being idle but good things can come from going off on a bit of a browsing tangent; mainly in the form of creative inspiration from others. Here is a run down of some of the eureka discoveries we were drawn to this week; monochrome minimalists look away now.

Michael Staniak

Staniak’s sculptures are alluring and hypnotic. the trance inducing effects have me imagining staniak on an intergalactic voyage mining cosmic souvenirs; returning to earth with his bounty, crusts of planets to sell as art. Bowie lyrics echo somewhere in the background “There's a Starman waiting in the sky, He'd like to come and meet us, But he thinks he'd blow our minds”. is michael a clever alien or an artist? once i manage to peel my gaze away from his array of pieces, all varying drastically in hue and scale, it is clear he is the latter. michael may be mortal but our minds are blown and the source is celestial.

Staniak’s process-oriented paintings and sculptures explore the relationship between two- and three-dimensionality in digital images.

"Through the application of imagery and manipulation of mediums “Staniak deliberately disrupts the visual cues that help distinguish digital and traditional image production. His works often combine textural and printed elements, creating a trompe-l’œil effect that manipulates with the viewer’s depth perception. The resulting hypnotic, textured surfaces act as a portal to a post-digital world, one in which we inhabit both physical and virtual spheres, and reflect on the issues this archival existence can entail”. - Station gallery.

It is said that “Starman” is a story of Ziggy Stardust, the human messenger of the Starman in the sky, delivering a message of hope to a dying Earth from extraterrestrial beings. i like to think of michael staniak as much the same.

jonny niesche

Jonny Niesche aka Jonny Honky is another hypnotic trance inducing wizard; aviating on ambience, his pieces straddle the line between painting and sculpture. the thick mirrored edges of yellow gold, silver or rose gold perfectly accenting and containing expertly faded abstracts, usually comprising of two or three colours fading into each other in contemporary meditation. the juxtaposition of dreamy pastels and blur against the expertise and precision of the execution makes for an enthralling experience as do the choices of colour, making the impact of each piece differ on the emotional spectrum from deep and moody or light and joyful, painting to painting.

Through his imaginative processes, Niesche highlights the power of both illusion and objecthood, to generate what he calls “image-objects”, pieces that straddle the line between painting and sculpture.

The Australian-born, Sydney-based artist has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Sydney, and Melbourne, and his work belongs to multiple public collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of South Australia..

“Niesche experiments with the effects of interactivity, involving the viewer spatially and physically in the act of looking. Niesche has traced his interest in the phenomena of perception to his childhood experience of visiting department-store cosmetic counters with his mother, where boredom mingled with fascination as he gazed at the colour range of eyeshadow palettes and the infinite reflections of the store’s mirrored architecture.” - Lundren Gallery

jonny’s fertile invention continues with The names of his works: ‘But still I wait’, ‘Nice one Picasso’, ‘Cosmic Calculator’, ‘Cosmos Cosmetics’, ‘Throb’

bertrand fournier

Bertrand Fournier is a French artist who was born in 1985. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Yusto/Giner have featured Bertrand Fournier's work in the past. Born in Île-de-France, Fournier began painting in his early 30’s. What started out as a hobby alongside his job as a nurse in a psychiatric infirmary became a compulsive artistic obsession. He has since achieved humungous success online and in galleries worldwide. “Fournier reconfigures organic forms into grander linear statements on untreated linen canvas. He flirts between abstraction and symbolism, figuration and minimalism. Bold combinations of bright colours are synthesised into disorderly settings as a deliberate gesture to celebrate the beauty of imperfection.” - Organthing.com
