Vintage Framed Woodcut Print by Eva Roemer (1889-1977)

Depicting a dreamy landscape scene looking through the foliage in the foreground over a lake to mountains in the background using a typically pale blue pastel colour palette and expertly executed printing technique.

Roemer was born in Berlin in 1889 into a family surrounded by artists as her father was renowned sculptor Bernardt Roemer. She had an impressive lineage with her grandfather Wilhelm Hensel being a Prussian Imperial Court painter, her uncle Kurt Hensel, a noted mathematician, and her great uncle composer Felix Mendelsohn.

After studying art at the Berlin and Hamberg art schools, Eva then studied the old masters in Italy and then continued to work as a painter, printmaker and musician then later travelled to the US where she worked and exhibited.

Typically her work features the colour blue and her subject matter is often dusky, and features images of lakes, mountains, and natural scenes. After a long life and extensive travel, she died in Partenkirchen, Germany, on October 11, 1977.

In comparison to other similar works of hers, this piece probably dates from the 1930s period.

Signed in pencil to the margin ‘Eva Roemer’ and inscribed ‘Original-Holzschnitt’ which translates as ‘Original-Woodcut’.

Framed and glazed in a simple limed wooden frame.

The print itself is in good vintage order with minimal wear, the mounting board has a bit of wear around the edge, but this isn’t hugely noticeable. The wooden frame is in good vintage condition with minimal wear.

Overall measurements: 49cm x 39cm.
