‘Boston House, Chiswick Square, London’, Original Oil on Canvas Painting by Sydney Joseph Iredale (1896-1967)

Depicting an evocative scene of a leafy London square with grey brick houses and iron gates.

Painted in a loose, familiar style expertly capturing the character of the locality with confident brushstrokes and a sensitive colour palette.

Boston House originally dates from the 1680s and is supposedly haunted by Lady Boston who was murdered by her husband. It was extended and refaced in the middle of the 18th century. In the early 19th century it was a school for girls and a plaque on its wall claims it as the setting for `Miss Pinkerton's Academy' in Thackeray's Vanity Fair where he describes Becky Sharp as ‘throwing the dictionary’ in the garden behind the gates.

Dating from the early-mid 20th century, circa 1920-1950.

Signed to the lower right and also inscribed verso with the Artist’s Richmond address.

Paper ‘South Eastern Federation of Art Societies’ exhibition label with the original price of five guineas verso.

In its original and beautifully hand-painted wooden frame.

The painting itself is in very good vintage condition with only minor wear consistent with age, there are a couple of small repairs to the canvas as can be seen from the back but these may have pre-dated the painting as there doesn’t appear to be restoration.
