5 New Lighting Designers You Need to Be Aware of in 2021

So it’s 2021 and we’re back in another lockdown; however, this time there’s light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re back to trawling on the internet for some inspiration to brighten up your home this dreary winter, or you’re simply looking for a 5 minute read to ‘spark’ your interests and ignite a burning passion for some unorthodox lighting designers, look no further! In true Blue Peter fashion, we have curated 5 of the best, new lighting designers you need to be aware of in 2021.

1. Christopher Boots

For any of you finding yourself connecting with nature this year, you’re not alone. Industrial lighting designer, Christopher Boots has a love for nature and light, and whilst some of us may have left maths and science back in secondary school, Christopher boots finds his main influence being the ‘mineral world’ and explores this ‘through the lens of mathematics, biology and chronology’. Christopher reminds us that we do not have to look far to find materials to get creative with and alongside his fascination with quartz crystals, he surrounds himself with rocks of all natures. In doing so, Boots has created some absolute masterpieces. A couple of our favourite’s pictured below:

2. Rosie Li

Somewhat similar to Boots, driven by nature, science and maths, sculptural lighting designer Rosie Li, combines ‘geometric forms’ with ‘organic elements’ showing an adaptability to both the environment and demands of sculptural lighting.

3. Boris Klimek

Ok, so now for something slightly different, product designer Boris Klimek ‘light bulb’ moment came when he discovered that he could create a balloon ceiling light. Klimek’s work searches for ‘conceptual overlaps, games and stories’ and in the process, has created some exceptionally  playful designs that take me right back to being a child, picking out my favourite coloured balloon, and gripping the string tightly with the fear that I’d disappear off into the sky with the balloon in tow. Boris Klimek’s ‘Memory Wall Light’ creates an illusion that the balloon is hanging from the ceiling, the strings act as light switches, the simplicity is genius.

4. Mary Walis

Contemporary light designer, Mary Wallis is fascinated with ‘transforming  the broken and unfinished into items of beauty and function’; her designs exhibit superior craftsmanship. Wallis has a natural ability to see the beauty in the broken, and her collection of chandelier’s combine slices of glass, exploding from their brass frame, reminiscent of a bird  breaking free, or a flower blossoming in the spring.

5. Larose Guyon

And last but by no means least, a duo you should watch out for. Sculptural lighting designers, Audrey Larose and Felix Guyon have handcrafted this beautiful light ‘Coco’ in tribute to Gabrielle Chasnel (Coco Chanel). Resembling a string of pearls with an attachable hook that allows the light the flexibility to fit any space, this is a pearl necklace designed to fit any owner.

‘Rich, enchanting narratives’ couldn’t better describe the intricate, timeless lighting designs created by the two, as they have captured the elegance of fine jewellery, a ‘metaphorical embodiment of the spirit of Paris in the 1930s’
