Vintage Oil on Board Portrait Painting by Alan Durman

Vintage Oil on Board Portrait Painting by Alan Durman

Vintage Portrait of Academics Smoking Pipes.

by renowned artist Alan Durman.

Best known for his travel posters for the railways and Butlins resorts during the 1930s to 1960s period Durman was also the resident artist for the Imperial tobacco company which incorporated W.D. & H.O. Wills Tobacco. This painting came from from the Wills Memorial Building, part of Bristol University which was donated by the Wills family and completed in 1925. It seems perfectly logical that Durman was commissioned by Wills, his then employers to paint some paintings for the building, tying in the universities new building with smoking.

It seems like this painting depicts two bearded academics pondering ideas whilst sitting in a cosy smoking lounge smoking pipe tobacco. It is a charming image with warm tones and almost an Art Deco style of painting that Durman would continue for his iconic Butlins pin-up style posters in his later years.

An oil on board painting framed in a simple mahogany frame.

Measuring: 65cm wide X 50cm high.

The painting is in a good vintage condition, there is a little bit of wear and tear as you would expect especially along the bottom edge. The frame is in good order. Please see photographs.
