19th Century Naive Oil on Canvas Tiger Painting

19th Century Naive Oil on Canvas Tiger Painting

Antique Anglo Indian Jungle Scene Painting

An absolutely charming oil on board painting, probably of Anglo Indian origin, depicting a recumbent tiger in amongst tropical foliage, possibly at dusk.

A naive style and very attractive colour palette.

Dating from the late 1880's the reverse of the canvas is covered in newspaper dating from 1888.

This would look excellent in pretty much any interior whether it be antique or eclectic and is bang on trend now with all the jungle inspired interiors featuring at the moment.

Could be framed up if desired but we think we like it unframed.

Measuring: 36cm wide X 28cm high.

The painting itself is in good vintage condition. There is no real damage as such just some crazing to the surface of the painting as you get with paintings of this age. This adds to the overall charm and aesthetic of the piece. The canvas is held in place on the stretchers by the original old nails but in some places as can be seen in the photos the edges are a little flappy. we have left this original as I don't want to start using modern glues. If you are going to keep this painting unframed you may choose to stick these edges down. Please see photos.
